D/S on gear lever

In my automatic karoq it says D/S beside the gear lever. I have twice accidentally knocked it into S. What is S and how do I get out of it if I end up in it again, please?

S is the Sport mode - which hangs on to a lower gear for longer and so helps you overtake slow tractors on country roads etc. The Instrument panel will show you using gears S1, S2, S3 etc instead of D1, D2 D3 etc. You engage it by pulling the gear lever back momentarily, and reset it to Drive mode by pulling the lever back again. It will also reset to Drive mode when you restart the engine.

But this is a very basic question and I'd suggest you take the time to read your owner's manual as there will be many other features of the car you won't understand if you don't! :)

Thank you. I tried reading about it in the manual but couldn't understand what it was telling me. I'm always better when someone explains in simple terms.

Okay, I'll accept it could be better written, but I'd still ask you to persevere with it if you can :)

On a related topic, if you happen to knock the gear lever to the left, you'll find it is now in Manual rather than automatic (with M1, M2, M3 etc displayed on the instrument panel. This lets you choose gears manually by pulling it back or pushing it forward... so if you do this by mistake you'll think that your automatic gearbox has broken!! You cure this by pulling the gear lever back to the right again.

In theory, this lets you choose a low gear for descending steep hills etc, but I've driven DSG cars now for almost 10 years and find the car copes perfectly well by itself in auto mode!
