First ever Skoda.

Post by DSL » Wed Jun 17, 2020 4:01 pm

Hi all!

Just put a deposit down on a delivery mileage pre-registered Karoq SE 2.0 diesel auto 4x4. Haven’t driven one, haven’t even sat in one, never seen the colour in the flesh (petrol blue), what could possibly go wrong?  Just gone by recommendations and the fact that my ILs love theirs. Plus my present set of wheels is a 13 year old Jazz after coming from decades of driving LR Discos, looking forward to fabled Skoda reliability.

It’s got a skinny spare fitted as standard, am I correct in thinking because of the 4x4 gubbins under the floor I wouldn’t be able to fit a full sized wheel in there? Keeping my eyes open for a full sized replacement, if it has to live in the boot on long hauls then that’s not the end of the world.

Looking forward to getting the car, and eventually being able to take it on some serious road trips.

Hi there,

I'm sure you'll be fine :)

You're right about the full size spare wheel. Because of the Haldex diff for the 4x4 the boot floor is a bit higher in the 4x4 cars than it is in the 2x4s. A full size wheel may well fit in the wheel well, but the boot floor will either be higher up and not properly supported around it, or may not even fit properly. (I haven't got my car yet and can't remember the exact details of the boot floor when I was looking at cars in the showroom.)

There's a detailed thread on this forum that talks about converting from a skinny spare wheel to a full-size one, so that will probably give some more information. See viewtopic.php?f=8&t=568

Not a problem if I can’t get it to fit properly, the full sized spare will just have to live in the boot. We generally travel light so a couple of bags in there with the wheel will be no problem. Plus that will free up space where the skinny one would be for limited “stuff”. This is how much stuff I used to carry in my Disco 3, before it died on a trip to N Norway. That habit has been well and truly kicked.

Picked up yesterday and I’m one very happy bunny. :)

150 mile drive home meant I could get used to all the essential bits and bobs. Nice light traffic, even got to use cruise control on the M25 in the rush hours!! Very nice to drive, very nice indeed, happy with the choice of 2.0 diesel auto. The trip comp thought 54mpg cruising at between 65 and 70 mph, no idea of the accuracy of said comp yet but nice to be getting low 50s rather than the high 20s I’ve been used to for similar driving.

Gratuitous pic from collecting it from dealer in Norwich. It’s a lot brighter than I though but do like it.
