1.0 TSI OR 2.0 TDI

Post by Thomas2019 » Mon Feb 11, 2019 10:42 am

Hi,

It's long waiting to get a new 1.5 TSI in Ireland, have to wait around 5 months.

May I know, Are owners of 1.0 TSI happy enough?
Is this engine enough quick in traffic lights and roundabouts?

OR Do I move to 2.0 TDI? What's Your opinion?

Thank You
Shine

This is an almost impossible question to answer without a little more information. For instance:

Do you tend to do lots of short journeys or longer motorway cruises?
Do you want a sporty driver or would you prefer a more relaxed drive?
Will you use the car to tow with?
Do you expect to keep the car long term or do you change frequently?
Would you prefer a manual transmission or a DSG?

Give us a little more and we may be able to help you otherwise all you will get is our personal opinions based on how we use the car.

Have fun,

Ian

Hi,

1. Short journeys through cities. very rarely use the long motorways.
2. Prefer relaxed drive
3. No, never use to tow
4. Yes, for the long term.
5. Now using Manual, So both should be OK, Which more suits with 1.0 TSI?

Thank You

Hi Thomas,

Your answers would all push me towards the petrol engines and, even with the long lead time, the 1.5 would be my choice (but be aware that some owners with 1.5 and manual transmissions have reported issues with the engine when running cold). However, there are plenty of happy 1.0TSi owners here. Diesel really only makes sense for higher mileage drivers. Short, runs with cold engines can rapidly gum up the emissions control gear found in modern diesel vehicles and the engines take quite a while to warm up, so cold days are not much fun. (My old diesel Yeti took around 10 miles to fully warm up in winter; I never liked wearing a jacket and gloves to drive).

I will let those with 1.0 TSi cars comment on the selection of the DSG or manual transmission. Personally, I love the DSG box mated to the 1.5TSi and my wife has a Fabia 1.2 with DSG which is also good though a little more jerky when pulling away than the Karoq. In the end, it is a personal preference. The manual should give slightly better fuel consumption and is a little cheaper to buy, but in heavy traffic the DSG box makes everything so much more relaxed.

Hope that helps,

Ian.

My current golf with 80BHP, underpower when using Aircon & at the quick movements in roundabouts.
Any such problem in Karoq 1.0TSI
(no 1.0 TSI available with the dealer to do a test drive)

1.0 TSI owners are also welcome to reply :)
Please share your experiences...

I have had a 1.0 TSI since November. Plenty powerful enough for me with acceptable acceleration. Probably wouldn’t be the best choice if you planned to do a lot of rapid overtaking on single carriageways but I prefer a nice sedate ride! Mine is a manual and the gear box is pretty smooth but not quite as slick changing up into 2nd gear as my Yeti was. Overall very pleased and perhaps a little surprised at how good such a small engine is.

im surprised you think the manual would give better fuel consumption than dsg. All relative to who is driving and their driving style. I find in normal use, going up through the gears ( dsg ) not foot on the floor, the dsg changes up just above 2000rpm drops to 1500rpm or thereabouts and continues to do the same until D4 or 5 depending on cruising speed. I would think it would be difficult to replicate that with a manual. Seems dsg keeps the revs optimum for good fuel consumption. Problem is I do like to stick in sport on occasion and make it go quick.

Paul,

The WLTP figures* for the 1.0 are:

6 gear manual: 42.8 - 40.4 mpg (120 g/km carbon)
7 gear DSG: 40.4 - 39.2 mpg (121 g/km carbon)

Hence my comment that the manual should give slightly better fuel consumption.

Of course, a heavy footed driver in a manual car could burn more fuel than a smooth, economically focussed, driver in a DSG but, all other things being equal, the manual will return slightly better fuel figures.

Have fun,

Ian.

* Obviously, these are not "real" fuel consumption figures but they should be good for comparing the relative fuel consumption of one vehicle to another.

I guess the 1.0L being less powerful than 1.5 may be the reason it's better with a manual box, but there's not much in it really
