Electric handbrake query

The electric handbrake is brilliant. However, altough I can't envisage how it could occur, if the battery failed and the car needed to be towed, how would the brakes be released? Also, does the handbrake work on a different set of inboard discs?

There is a button next to the gear lever to switch off the auto handbrake. If the brakes fail, then the handbrake switch held up will then operate the brakes. I tried it and it was like hitting a brick wall, so it's not recommended.
