Can anybody tell me what the 'clip' bit nearest seats on the hook rails are for?

Not too sure which clips you're asking about ... but presumably not the moveable hooks themselves.

The boot lining seems to vary depending whether you have the VarioFlex rear seats or not. I haven't and so only have the 'hook rail' on the nearside with no extra hooks on or near it. The offside of the boot does have a strap to secure the folding warning triangle in its case (not provided as standard in the UK but available as a VAG-wide accessory.)

The manual seems to show some clips to secure the net system, but mine use the metal hooks securing the bench rear seat.

If it is two little notches forming a 'hook' then I'm fairly certain that these are for securing the nets.
