SPACE SAVER SPARE WHEEL

I have a 03/2019 Karoq 4x4 Estate. I had my first puncture in the right hand front wheel a week ago. I got the local tyre fitters to swap out the punctured wheel for the space saver, and drove home. The car was pulling hard to the right all the way home, and the wheel was hot. I returned to the tyre fitters, and they swapped the front space saver for one of the rear tyres. It appears that the clever 4x4 gizmo, had noticed that the front right was going round faster than the front left wheel, and assumed that I had wheel spin, and applied the brake to it. Hence the pulling to the right and hot wheel . I switched off the anti-spin function, and all was well. I had a look in the hand book, and there is no mention that this might happen with the space saver. Maybe there should be ?

Many thanks for your observations. I'm sure it will alert others to the problem.
It is generally considered by many that Skoda handbooks are sadly lacking in a few areas. (in common with most makes!)

Im suprised that this should happen as if the space saver was the correct Sizing for your Car (and wheels) it shoudl have the same diameter and rolling circumference. Measure the diameter of the spare against one of the other wheels and see what the difference is, also was it properly inflated, an under inflated tyre would effect its relative size and may have caused this...

Else they have just supplied the wrong spare with the car, I have a 2019 4x4 what are your wheel and tyre sizes ? I'll go and check my spare and let you know the size...

Hi TG,
Thanks for your reply, I have had a look at sizes, and the car has 225 x 45 R19 on, and the Spacesaver is 125 x 70 R18
That is quite a difference. I doubt they could get a bigger wheel in the space. The rolling circumference is considerably less.

Hey Oldman,

My tires are the same size including the spare which is concerning, I've never used the spare so I can't comment on performance, howeverI've done an online comparision and this shows the rolling sizes to be totally different, no wonder your car got so upset... Anyone got any info on this as I can't belive skoda would allow this to be an acceptable option...

My MY21 Karoq Sportline has 225/45 R19 tyres on 19" Vega alloys, and the optional 125/70 R18 tyre on a steel 18" wheel. So it seems to be a standard fitting, (And a full size spare will not fit under the boot floor in a 4x4's shallow wheel well.)

For FWD cars you can also choose a 215/60 R16 tyre on a 16" wheel!

The manual merely says that the wheel is intended to get you to the nearest specialist garage.
