Adding apps to Android Play

Just wondering if there's a way of adding additional apps not immediately recognised by Android Play. I would like to use my CoPilot app.
Good question, also been trying to find out. I know that some apps only show up if they are on the phone, like Waze showed up day 1 but when I actually came to try it in comparison to built in nav and google maps, it was missing. When I looked on the phone it was marked as not frequently used. When I was next in the car, Waze showed up again.
found it a bit crap on android auto compared to when I used to use it on the phone...
