Sat Nav!...

Having been the original owner of an 2011 Octavia 1.8 for eleven years with 66000 miles motoring without any faults, only servicing and tyre replacements I felt quite reassured to exchange for new Karoq 1.5 SE.......which I did in April this year.

I have read endless tales of woe within this forum and like others I have been appalled with the performance of the supposedly efficient updated Sat. Nav application.

I currently have two issues which despite consulting my local garage remain a serious problem:-

1. Whilst alone in the car, without a mobile phone, the voice control activated with the message “ how can I help you”..without any response from myself it then told me it was contacting one of my friends and preceded to phone him.
AGAIN Last week 1 hour into driving to Norwich the voice control switched on and after the same offer of help....without any prompt said I am switching off the preset navigation route...and preceded to do so.
I can confirm that I did not activate voice control on either occasion!

2. For some weeks I have an intermittent fault with the reversing camera...sometimes it works and other times not.

I have spoken at length to the local Skoda garage who have too date not been too helpful...initial response to camera is if it is intermittent better to wait until it stops working. On the question of the Sat Nav. Initially not willing to undertake any investigation themselves but will ask Skoda if they will auth. action...whatever that is.

So my apologies for this lengthy tale but like so many of the forum members I feel let down by both Skoda and their local franchise.
Apart from these issues the car really does run well ...why on earth did not Skoda etc. ensure the infotainment system was fit for purpose prior to allowing it to go live? Surely we as the buying public can bring pressure to push for an update?

Should either problem be resolved I will post...do not hold your breath!

1) Depending on menu settings (I think from memory) the voice control can be activated either by pressing the button on the steering wheel, or by it hearing the words 'OK Laura'. Now the latter can obviously be confusing if your wife is called 'Laura', and I'm pretty sure I have that option turned off in the menu system. Certainly, I've never had the car talking to me like yours!

2) I've seen others complaining about the rear-view camera not always working, and as I understand it yours can only be activated by selecting reverse gear. (My Area View cameras also have a button which will activate them.) Could you try wiggling the gear selector in the reverse position to see if that activates the camera? If so, is there a micro-switch by the selector which is not quite in the right position?

Chris,

Thank goodness the vehicle is not named HERBIE....

In so far as the reversing camera is concerned no amount of moving the gear stick produces any change.....I have made a video of the blank screen showing the gear lever in reverse and suggested to the garage that they use that to pressure Skoda into auth. a check of the wiring ....cannot understand why the franchise does not just assume responsibility and check !

What I forgot to mention is that to avoid any interruption to the input destination the garage endeavoured to turn off the voice control until such time as Skoda responded... they told me they had done so but could not understand why it was still active! Well if they do not know what chance do we mere mortals have?

Hopefully Skoda will agree to a complete investigation under the warranty provisions....cannot see that they can refuse...surely not a situation whereby letters will be flying around like confetti?

My dealer has told me that the problems with MIB are worrying.
A friend of mine bought a new Octavia iV PHEV and very nearly had to reject it as being unfit for purpose due to the sat nav.
I gather from my dealer that there is now a fix. Contact your dealer.

Hi Colin,

Much obliged for the info. I will do as you suggest...the worrying aspect to all this is the dealerships seemingly lack of knowledge about these problems and surely you would have thought that they would be the first to know about any remedial fixes?

Hopefully my enquiries and persistence will bear fruit.....but I cannot see that it will be any time soon....in the meantime if I get lonely o one of my trips I will always have HERBIE’s voice control keeping me awake with its unprovoked messages !

Budgie,

What age Karoq do you have, and which infotainment system?

The MY 21 and MY22 Karoqs have USB-C ports and the MIB3 third generation infotainment systems. These download map updates via their 'online' internet connection and not via the USB port (although there was a rumour this would be possible sometime in the future).

If you have an earlier Karoq, then follow the instructions on the Skoda Update webpage (which I think needs you to copy the files to an SD memory card.)

All,

I promised to give an update should there be any developments with my intermittent camera fault. I had already produced a video indicating reverse gear selected and camera not working to the franchise. In turn they promised to contact Skoda and let me know the result. Despite two mails no response. So I contacted my friendly solicitor who advised that I contact garage quoting the relevant trading standards paras. Sections 9 , 10 & 23. Low and behold attitudes quickly changed and I am assured an investigation will now be booked and Skoda contacted for advice. As my contract is with the franchise I will put my concerns in writing quoting my right to contact the ombudsman should the fault not be rectified within one month. Solicitor says I have a good case of “ unfit for purpose claim” should fault not be repaired within a reasonable timescale.

I have upon searching the web confirmed that this fault is rife amongst the Karoq model....

Update to follow should any further info. become available.

I am having an electrical issue with a car from a different manufacturer, which I hope is on the way to being resolved. However, in my case the car was not purchased from the agent who was attempting the repair. I wonder if the above approach could have been in my case.

Hopefully the final episode in this unfortunate situation.
Following my ultimatum to the franchise in which I mentioned “Ombudsman “ and legal advice received, I have at last been treated as a paying customer who has a legitimate problem. I am told that Skoda we’re contacted and they authorised a complete replacement of the offending reversing camera. Hopefully the new unit will be fit for purpose !

The journey to this stage has not been easy or without its problems and I am not too happy with Skoda for its clear reluctance to timeiously address my issues but it would appear that the end result of a new camera is a RESULT.

My message to other Skoda owners must be persevere, persevere and if required seek legal advice.

Kindest regards,

Dudley Davenport.
