We bought a new Karoq last summer, at the time it was probably mentioned to us about the filter and to take the car for a long run from time to time but didn't think much about it. Anyway, starting from about 3 months after using the car the DPF warning went off. It has now consistently gone off at least once a month. We queried this with the dealer who said as long as you take it for a long drive once a month it shouldn't be a problem. The car does have at least one long run once a month but also has a number of short journeys. Is this likely to cause any permanent damage to the filter? Or is burning off the soot on a longer drive sufficient each time the warning light comes on? I've tried to do some research and just read scary stories about how much it costs to replace the filter but no information about it happening intermittently.

Thanks for any guidance anyone can provide.

Modern diesels and short journeys don’t mix. Too many failed regenerations as well as blocking the dpf also brings into play the possibility of engine oil dilution by unburnt diesel (check engine oil level regularly and beware if it is raised).

See:

I have owned diesels for the last 20 years and the last one, a 2.0 Yeti tdi, for 10 years. My driving pattern has changed and have now bought a petrol Karoq. I can’t see me ever owning another diesel. Dpfs are a flawed technology especially if you do lots of short journeys.

I wouldn't touch a diesel with a barge pole now (though I have had many in the past) the main reason is the bl**dy DPF, the second is 'ADBLOO'. The most important is that with the current hate campaign against DERV, the residuals will be rubbish. I change my car about every 12-18 months.
If you keep your cars 'til they drop that doesn't really matter, as long as you are prepared to put up with DPF and Adblue!

Sorry, you asked a question and we gave you reasons not to buy a diesel.

Dpfs are designed to burn off the soot on a regular basis. Too many interrupted regenerations is the problem. The usual indicators of a regeneration taking place are the engine running slightly hotter and the tickover revs being higher by say 200 rpms. Alright for me to say that but I could never tell when my Yeti was regenerating.
The advice of doing a regular decent run is good.
If you turn off the engine and the fan is running then you have interrupted a dpf regeneration. Restarting and going for a run immediately may help. I would do it in a lower gear to keep the revs up. What it will also help with is burning off the excess diesel being pumped into the system which would otherwise get into the engine oil. The manual does not mention engine oil dilution, it is a potential problem however.
The trick is to try and recognise when a regeneration is taking place.

You are into managing how you use your car. Modern diesels and short runs just don’t mix.

Check out page 48 in the Manual:

The particulate filter separates and burns the soot particles from the exhaust.
48 Operation
  lights up – the filter is clogged with soot.
To clean the filter, if allowed by the traffic conditions » , you should drive at a
speed between 50-120 km/h in the recommended gear.
If the filter is properly cleaned, the warning light  extinguishes.
If the indicator light  does not go out within 30 minutes, the filter was not cleaned.
▶ Immediately drive to the nearest specialist garage with appropriate caution.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Can’t return the car so will just have to minimise the short journeys and hope no damage is caused!
