Spark Plug Change

Post by AJC137 » Wed Nov 18, 2020 10:56 pm

Hi all,

Just booked a 36000 2nd service for my 1.5 dsg sel at £250.
I was also told that at 40K mikes a spark plug change is required and this is going to cost me an additional £120. This seems a lot of money for what is essentially a service item. Does anyone know if I am being ripped off?

I remember when you had to gap and clean plugs every 6,000 miles, and change them every 12,000! So only having to change them after 40,000 miles shows what progress we have made!

But even so, according to Skoda's Fixed Price Servicing scheme at https://www.skoda.co.uk/owners/servicin ... ixed-price
changing spark plugs should only be £99. I'd refer your dealer to that price list.

Thanks Chris, I remember those days too, Tappets and feeler gauges were also a delight!

I will take it up with the dealer.

The major problem on modern engines is actually finding the spark plugs!

As a retired motor vehicle Technician for the past 10 years I honestly cannot remember the last time I actually changed spark plugs on any off my own or any vehicles that I have serviced over the past 20 years, one off the reasons was that there was an up surge in diesel car ownership also I worked for a company that changed all its fleet to diesel engined,, when I retired I stopped getting my hands dirty also my wife decided to get a car on lease which was also good as I did not have to service it
